You would only want to consider getting one if you are in the construction or landscaping business or you have a big project ahead of you that requires a lot of cement. One of these can run you several hundreds of dollars.
There are some alternatives however. If you need to mix more than a dozen 50 pound bags but it’s only a one time thing, then what you can do is go down to your local Home Depot or hardware store and rent one out. It should cost you about $50 or so. Although this may be more expensive than mixing the cement on your own, you will be saving a ton of time. If you need a lot of cement, say you were going to redo your driveway for example, then what you can do is rent out a cement truck. With these, you will typically pay by the load.
If buying a portable electric cement mixer is what you are looking for but you don’t want to spend a ton of money, then what you can do is look online for a used electric cement mixer. You can usually find cement mixers for sale at pretty decent prices, saving you at least 20%. Sometimes, you can even buy them used at the hardware store. The mixers that the store rents out to people will wear out over time but since they are still usable, you can buy them from the store for a deep discount. You can also look for them on sale on places like Craigslist where you can sometimes find people wanting to get rid of their electric concrete cement mixer for an extremely attractive price.
With the down turn in the housing market, a lot of construction workers have changed careers or need to sell their tools to pay off debt. Because of this, if you don’t mind buying used cement mixers, you can save a lot of money. Either way, using an electric cement mixer whether you buy it or rent it sure beats mixing this stuff manually.
